Rehabilitation activity:Rakhi Unit -- Sold rakhi worth Rs.2.5 Lacks

This year Rakhi Unit sold rakhis worth Rs.2.5 Lacks. It is a record sale. The schools are co operating kind  kindheartedly. It is more than 17 years since we selling rakhi through schools. For the whole of the year our group of students make rakhi under the close supervision of staff and they ably guided by couple of trustees of Sandnya.
Though we have achieved the record sales but the net profit after expenses is the same as last year. It is because the cost different raw material has gone up, but we have not raised selling price of different varieties. Nevertheless, participants of Rakhi Unit will get their monthly stipend.
In the selling network lot of parents of our students, donors, staff and volunteers were involved. It is indeed a joint and group effort. The consistency on our part has resulted in schools have scheduled their yearly activity calendar keeping our Rakhi stalls in mind. It is indeed a achievement in terms of spreading the message that "mental disability is not work disability".

Summer camp 2015 "Shramdan"

"Shramdan":-  During this summer camp one of the mornings after the walk there is a 2 hours time doing physical work for all camp met. Cleaning of the small part of the campus was taken up. The sight was back side of the building. All the students with staff took part in it along with secretary of SSS also participating in this drive. The idea of taking such a exercise is to help developing concept of cleanliness, sense of co operation among peer group etc. They are not used to do these things at home and thus initially there is a reluctance in many of them in the beginning. But as they see their teacher and staff doing it they also attempt to do. Some of them will have late response like Idris. But all of them make a attempt. The only thing is we have to give them time, some times physical prompting or verbal prompting as well. For few of them it is a fun and they enjoy.

Admissions in Sandnya

Process of admission to Kalpataru Special school of Sandnya is going on. Parents are already informed whose wards are on wait list. And few admissions are being done, Principal  informs. We may not be in a position to admit more than 8/9 students in total. The admission depends on the seat availability in each class and it is done accordingly.

Students ready to come back after the play
Inmates for the residential camp go for morning walk and play games also. Most of them will be involved in playing but couple of them are not interested. The reason is, one of the essential ingredients of mental disability is lack of motivation. And it becomes very difficult to convince them that they should participate in the game. The technical reason for this is probably there is a damage in the cognition center in the brain. In few cases they may not even move from their place where they are sitting or standing. It is extremely difficult to understand what is going on in their mind!

Summer camp of Sandnya Students

A yearly event of summer camp for selected mentally challenged students is under going in Sandnya Srushti campus since 5/5/15 morning. The objective being to socialize them better, developing sense of co operation, sharing and helping them to adopt to the changed environment is the main motto. This a weeks stay also intended to help them become self sufficient in activities for daily leaving[ADL]. The get an opportunity to leave away from their parents and families and that should help them in emotional adjustments since they have to accommodate themselves for 24 hrs. Couple of them find difficult to sleep on first and second night since they are used to a certain and fixed type of settings. Also they have to get up little early in the morning because they have to go to a morning walk and for out door sports. In the begging some are reluctant but during morning walk all of them are very happy. First couple of days they are a bit uncomfortable during noon hours since they could not get sufficient sleep during night hours though they are supposed to got to bed by 9:00 pm. Their dinner time being 7:45 pm.

There were  few lady trustees along with Sandnya well wishers also who stayed over night in Sandnya Srushti. The main objective of organizing this night out is to make these mothers of our students relax. The agenda for these days includes couple of events to help mothers with certain problems like, their own health issues & stress management. The ex-Deen of GMC, Nagpur was the resource person who through ppt explained the stress related points in our life and how it can be managed with little or no extra efforts on our part. She answered varied questions put by mothers. There was a brief cultural program presented by mothers, our staff and siblings as well. Saturday night there was a campfire also. This night out event is a yearly feature at Sandnya Srushti and year after year number of participants is going up, a good sign indeed. Sandnya not only does special education, vocational training & rehabilitation activities but it has a holistic approach. Sandnya tries to provide support to mentally challenged & their families in almost all fields. It provides extended support to family members including siblings also. It is this holistic approach that makes Sandnya stand apart.
